Saturday saw our Sponsors and Past Players Day being held at Kelvedon Park, in what was a massive day for the Club! Three back to back senior home games certainly brought in the crowd, and the weather was surprisingly kind to the teams playing throughout the day. A huge thank you to everyone who attended, helped out in running the kiosk and BBQ, and especially to our amazing Sponsors and representatives who made it out to support the club in person.
The game schedule kicked off at 10.30am with our Men’s Championship 1 team taking on University S.C. in a tough match. Thanks to a goal by Toby Dove, our team might have escaped with a tie, however our Pirates were unable to convert a penalty, and a later penalty awarded to the opposition made the Uni Bees the winners with the final score being 1-2. In the Men’s Championship game, similar disappointment was felt as our Pirates couldn’t hold onto our 1-0 lead. Luke Warrener and Oliver Maxwell did well to get onto the score sheet, however University managed to equalise in the second half, leaving the score 2-2. The tie still keeps our Men’s Championship team in second place in the league, and they will hopefully be able to finish the season strong to remain there.
To wrap up the massive day of games on Saturday, our WSL Pirates took on the Clarence Zebras. The first half looked promising for our Pirates, although the opposition were leading 0-2 at half time. One of the team’s youngest, Cholada Gale, gave our home side high hopes of taking the game back in the 58th minute, when Daisy Parsell’s initial shot was too strong for the Zebras’ keeper to hold onto, and Cholada was in prime position to finish the job and put it into the back of the net. Unfortunately the team could not keep up the momentum and conceded again shortly afterwards, leaving the score 1-3. Our Women’s Championship team also took on a Clebras fixture at Kelvedon on the Sunday, and although they put up a very tough fight the final score was 0-4 in favour of the opposition. Our Women’s Championship 1 team travelled to D’Arcy Street to take on South Hobart, and unfortunately lost the game 0-6.
The biggest game of the weekend was undoubtedly on Sunday at KGV, where our Men’s Championship 3 team took on the Barnstoneworth Scrappers in the SC3 League Cup Final. Our Pirates started the game incredibly strong, with Marcus Atkinson and Kaspar Deane putting us ahead early with a 2-1 lead. But with youth not on their side, our Pirates could not hold onto the lead and the opposition managed to equalise, sending the game into extra time. The Barnstoneworth Scrappers eventually won the game 2-4, however our Social Men’s team have been given a shot at redemption when they take the Cup winners on again this Friday at Wentworth Park. Hopefully they can exact their revenge this weekend!
Best of luck to all our teams playing this week!
