Last Saturday saw a successful day for our Senior Men’s teams at Olinda Grove when our Pirates took on the University Bees. Our Men’s Ressies had a great start to the afternoon, winning their game 2-0 after youngster Joel Terhell put away a goal in the first half, and Adrian Bett adding to the scoreboard in the second. Once again, they are taking on the league’s second placed outfit, and will need a win to remain at the top of the ladder. Our Men’s Championship had an even more decisive win on Saturday against their age-old rivals, Beachside. After a scoreless first half, Noah Gardner was the one to open the floodgates when he scored in the 65th minute. Additional goals by Rami Vilar and Fergus Bridge, who scored a brace, contributed to the 4-0 victory. If our Pirates can claim a win over New Town this weekend, they too will take the number 1 spot in the league.
Sunday bought about a mixed bag of results, with our Social Men’s team having to forfeit their game against neighbourly nemeses, the Kingborough Lions, due to a perceived clash of shirt colours. Our Social Women’s team took on New Town White Eagles SC at home and although they fought valiantly in a very tough match, and although Sophie Nash contributed a stellar effort and hat-trick, they lost the game 3-11. Our Women’s Super League team were over at Wentworth Park taking on the Clarence Zebras in a well-hyped competition. After a rather flat performance in the first half, which saw our Pirates concede 3 goals, they dug deep and put in a phenomenal effort to finish the game strong. Super sub, Jade Walker, nabbed a goal in the 80th minute, and for a moment it looked like our Pirates might have been able to equalise the match, with Cholada Gale scoring minutes later and Jade Waker scoring again right before the 90th minute. Unfortunately our WSL Pirates had to settle for a 3-5 loss, however the final minutes of the game saw the classic Taroona FC ‘Never Say Die’ attitude in full swing, and will hopefully be enough to motivate a league upset when our Pirates take on South Hobart at Kelvedon this Saturday.
Best of luck to all our Pirates this weekend, make sure to get on out and support our players at both home and away games!
