After showing a huge turnaround in their season, our WSL Pirates travelled up to Devonport full of optimism that they would be able to improve on the 1-1 result last time they were at Valley Road. Unfortunately, a lack lustre team performance had the team conceding goal after goal in a 0-7 loss. The welcome 2 week break in the League while the opening rounds of the Women’s World Cup are played gives our Pirates some time to reflect, recover and rejuvenate themselves before their return to Lightwood Park on the 4th of August.

Our Men’s Championship Pirates were at Darcy Street on Sunday taking on South Hobart. Despite Ollie Maxwell scoring first in the game, our lads couldn’t hold onto the lead and were eventually overpowered by the home side, the final score being 1-3. Previously in the Reserves game, our Pirates slogged out a gritty but exciting game and managed a 3-2 victory in the dying moments of the match. Ted Moffit scored in the 9th minute, levelling the score to 1-1 and allowing the team to breathe some relief after having conceded shortly after the opening whistle. They went into the change rooms 1-2 down, and put in a fantastic second half to keep South Hobart at bay, with Toby Dove slotting away a penalty and Tom Roberts scoring in the 89th minute to seal the victory. A huge well done to our Championship Reserves for a fantastic comeback.

Our Women’s Social team also had a fantastic game on Sunday, showcasing their best performance all year. Player/Coach, Shani Grace Reid, opened the scoring at 23 minutes, and Sophie Booth added her nam to the score sheet to put our Pirates ahead 2-1 at half time. Holly Mayo scored early in the second half, and Sophie Booth scored her second later in the game, however it wasn’t enough to prevent a 4-5 loss. It was still a great effort put in by all in a very tight game with plenty of shots on goal, well done Pirates!

This weekend sees a break in all League games, however our Men’s Championship Pirates will be playing their R8 match against University FC, after the game was postponed due to severe wind earlier in the season. Get along to KGV on Wednesday 26th of July to cheer them on!
