Last week’s batch of senior games kicked off under the Friday night lights at a recently renovated Clennett’s Lightwood Park, with our WSL Pirates keen to get back on the field after a 2 week break. Adding to the excitement was the arrival of new signee, Jessie Williams, who joins our senior women’s team fresh off the back of a VFLW grand final victory with Port Melbourne. The added confidence, coupled with Jessie’s athletic expertise, was just what our WSL Pirates needed to notch their first League win in a dramatic 4-3 battle. Kingborough Lions scored early in the half as our Pirates were adjusting their sails in the less than favourable windy conditions, but Jessie Williams managed to equalise in the 35th minute, with Daisy Parsell slotting home another goal to put the team ahead before half time. Jessie scores again in the second half, but just as our Pirates thought they had the game in the bag with a healthy lead, Kingborough put another couple away to equalise the score. A late corner in the 88th minute seemed to be the last lifeline our Pirates could clutch to, and with Jessie placing it perfectly within Maeve Dunbabin’s range, Maeve was able to head the ball neatly away to steal the game back from the Lion’s clutches. Our WSL Pirates now look forward to travelling to Launceston this Sunday to take on Launceston United SC.
Our senior Men’s teams returned to their League games at home where they took on Hobart United FC. Our Ressies emerged victorious thanks to goals by Aidan Taylor, Jasper Gardner, Phil Gale, and Toby Dove. The 4-2 win keeps the 2023 League title within their reach, with only 1 point determining the ladder leader from the 2nd and 3rd placed teams, with our Pirates currently sitting in 3rd. Our Men’s Championship team had a rough start to the game, finding themselves 0-4 down and minus a player due to a red card in the 65th minute. However, they dug deep and continued battling, with Toby Fleming and Noah Gardner scoring to bring the final tally to 2-6. We wish our senior lads the best of luck on Saturday as they take on South East United, who they recently played in the League Cup a few weeks back.
