Our last mega-match day at Kelvedon kicked off Saturday at 10am when our Men’s Reserves hosted the Uni bees. Toby Dove put in an incredibly strong performance, scoring a hat trick which included a well-placed penalty. Joel Terhell also nabbed a goal, before being awarded a slice of cheese, which contributed to our Pirates’ 4-2 victory. The win was not enough to catch their League rivals, the New Town Eagles, and our Reserves Pirates will finish the season in 2nd place, just one point shy of New Town. We have the finals series kicking off on the 17th of September, so keep an eye out for details over the following week!
Our Men’s Championship team also played their last league game on Saturday, and they came out of the Kelvie change rooms on an absolute mission. The first half was the Ollie Maxwell Show, with this club legend putting away 4 fantastic goals, and Noah Gardner contributing one of his own to give our Pirates a 5-2 lead at half time. University dug deep in the second half, but our Pirates fought hard to prevent a comeback although it was a nerve-wracking match at times, and kept hold of the win with the final score being 5-4. Although they won the Southern Championship League Cup on Wednesday, they finished 6th on the ladder in a far from disappointing season.
Later, our WSL Pirates welcomed the Devonport Strikers to Kelvie in the second last WSL game of the year. The much anticipated return of Adelyn Ayton was short lived after some reckless hits from the opposition, resulting in a concussion for our FIFO Pirate. We wish Addy a speedy recovery and hope to see her back home at Kelvedon some time in the near future. Our WSL Pirates fought valiantly in a physically tough match, with Maeve Dunbabin scoring late in the first half to equalise the score. Unfortunately the scales were tipped back into Devonport’s favour when a penalty was awarded to them only minutes later. A third goal early in the second half would have been the canon that sunk the ship in earlier matches this season, but our resilient Pirates dug deep and fought back with Daisy Parsell and Jessie Williams each scoring in quick succession. The score remained level at 3-3, and our WSL team now looks to play the Clarence Zebras on Saturday with the hopes of securing one more win.
Over at Risdon Vale our Social Women’s team played an exceptional last game, with both teams pushing for a goal to break the deadlock for the majority of the match. Unfortunately, Nelson Eastern Suburbs FC nabbed 2 goals in the final 15 minutes to secure the 3 points.
This weekend our WSL Pirates and Men’s Social team now play the last game of the year, with our Men’s Championship Reserves team still working hard behind the scenes as they get ready for the finals series. A huge congratulations to all our teams so far this year, and best of luck to all our Pirates playing this weekend.
