After a resounding 6-0 win over the current champions New Town Eagles last weekend, our Men’s Championship Pirates went into Saturday’s game with plenty of confidence, but ultimately tied with the Glenorchy Knights 1-1 with a goal to Ollie Maxwell. Coach Scott Gannon said: “Application was good and the commitment to play how we went to play was evident. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t our day in front of goal and we were unable to capitalise on our many chances. We also have Scotty to thank after pulling off some brilliant saves late on. We now look forward to a weekend off, which will hopefully allow us to get a few players back on the pitch.” Earlier in the day, our Men’s Championship 1 team also tied with the Knights 3-3, with goals by Nick Kains (2) and Andrew Thomer (1).

Our U18s Squad were set to play Devonport City Strikers in this weekend’s U18 Statewide Cup round, however an early forfeit by the Strikers sees our Pirates sailing through to R2 unscathed! After an unfortunate loss on Sunday against the Clarence Zebras, Coach Holly-Lace Ayton said: “Over the past few weeks, the focus for our U18 squad has been building up attacking play through the midfield to front third. It was great to see improvements and to have many goal scoring opportunities. Phoebe O’Brien had an excellent game winning 1v1s and creating combinations with her team mates. Over the next few weeks we look forward to concentrating on defending counter attacks. A great performance for our U18s, especially when playing against majority of opposition players who are two years older.” After an early own goal, which put our Pirates ahead in the first minute of the game, Mollie Stubbs did well to score in the 10th minute, putting the team ahead once more. But an onslaught of attacks in the remainder of the first half did too much damage to recover from.

We only have a couple of games on this weekend, as our Senior Men’s and Women’s teams have not progressed to the later stages of the Lakoseljac and Statewide Cups, respectively. A great opportunity to get out and support our Pirates this Friday night and Saturday morning! Best of luck to all our teams playing.
