REFEREES NEEDED

Updated: Apr 3

Looking for some extra cash?

Always going to watch your sibling/child play in youth football and end up refereeing?

Are you over 13 years old?

Football Tasmania are looking for more people to get into paid refereeing.

This is a great way to be around more football, get outside in the fresh air and earn some pocket money.

Taroona Football Club encourages players, parents, members of the club and community to get qualified.

If you are a registered club member the club will reimburse you for the course cost and uniform cost of becoming a referee, upon completion of the course.

Level 4 Referee Courses

YTD = 5 courses have been run across the state. 5 more courses are scheduled to run this year. The next 2 courses are going to be CRITICAL to us having the required referees to deliver as close to 100% coverage as possible – Football Tasmania need 15 minimum on each course.

Launceston, L4 on 13/4 (2pm-6pm)

Hobart, L4 on 23/4 & 30/4 (this is one course, run across two evenings from 6-8pm).

Ulverstone, L4 on 18/5 (10am-2pm)

Nathan Coad, Referee Development Manager is strongly requesting people to place an Expression of Interest 2025 Football Tasmania Referee Course Expression of Interest (until PFv2.0 issues are fixed). Nathan will then support individuals completing registration for the course and all things associated.Referee Course information can be accessed here Referee Course Calendar | Football Tasmania.

Referee Remuneration Rates & Travel Rates can be found here Referee Resources | Football Tasmania.Online pre-work takes roughly 4hrs. this requires completion ahead of attending the practical course. The practical course runs for 4hrs.

Context:

Referee numbers are on a growth trajectory. Increased to 132 in 2023. Increased to 144 in 2024. Game Leader Course completion also saw considerable growth, with 84 boys or girls aged <13yo completing a Game Leader course and refereeing junior matches, which is a great starting point to progressing through a Level 4 course with FT in future.

2024 & 2025 YTD Coverage of Matches:

Football Tasmania had 2,354 matches scheduled in 2024. Below is a high level view of referee coverage of matches in 2024 and 2025 YTD.

With 144 registered referees in 2024, and variance in referee availability in each week (injuries, work, family, holidays) FT often had 5 to 7 matches per week that weren’t covered. In 2025, we have similar team numbers in senior competitions. FT have 15 extra youth teams (which is super) – however, means they require more referees to cover the extra 7 matches.
