A huge thank you to all our incredible community members for making the weekend's SASS Charity Round a huge success!
Â
This weekend we are taking part in another important awareness-raiser, for an organisation that is close to one of our new Pirate's heart: the Run With Grace.
Â
You may have seen our new American import, Sara Knott, playing with our WSL Pirates in midfield recently. She is organising a 5km run in memory of her late friend, Grace.
Â
Sara says, "While I’m coming to the Taroona community from 8000 miles away, I would love to bring part of my Medford, Oregon community to you all. On Saturday, April 19th, at 9am, please join my teammates and I for a fun 5km run (with brunch served after) to honour the life of my friend Grace, who died from suicide in 2016.
Â
Back at home, this run is an annual event organized by Grace’s mom and her friends to celebrate the life of her daughter— as well as to raise awareness around suicide and mental health. This run brings me closer to the community that raised me, as well as brings me closer to Grace’s spirit.
Â
There are about a thousand and one things I could say about this event, the impact of her death, what this run means to my community, and about suicide prevention and mental health— but I will leave this small invitation at this: Grace was one of the sweetest, funniest, smartest people I ever had the privilege of knowing. Being able to honor her from anywhere in the world means a lot to me, her family, and her memory.
Â
Just as well, the message of suicide prevention and mental health is resonant universally— across every community, country, and continent. If you are able and willing, my teammates and I would be thrilled to see you at Kelvedon for a fun run!"
