The friendly folks at Impressions Dental Prosthetics, Maria and Lauren, have given us a few tips for when considering mouthguards for your self, or your child. The biggest take away being - always go for a professionally fitted mouthguard over the boil-and-bite models, and here's why:

  1. Safety: it's probably the first thing that springs to mind when considering a mouthguard for sport - the safety of your teeth, lips, gums and mouth. But a lesser known fact is that a professionally fitted mouthguard also helps to protect the wearer from concussion! Acting as a shock absorber between the mandible and the skull from any impacts to the face, mouthguards are becoming increasingly popular in many contact sports such as soccer for this very important reason. The only catch - to reap all the benefits, your mouthguard has to actually fit correctly!

  2. Efficiency: having a mouthguard that is professionally fitted means that it will be most efficient in your sporting practices. It has less chance of becoming dislodged during play, which means you won't have to constantly readjust it - or transfer bacteria into your mouth if it falls out and onto the field! Another added bonus - having a professionally fitted mouthguard means that you will be able to breathe as it will sit snugly, and not inhibit air-flow.

  3. Post-Braces Protection: many sports players wear mouthguards to protect their lips from their braces in contact sports, avoiding any nasty cuts and lacerations. But after spending all that time and money on your teeth - why wouldn't you continue to protect them afterwards?

  4. Upgrading Yearly: younger players, especially children and teens, are constantly going through growth spurts and body changes. It's important that protective gear, such as mouthguards, are re-fitted every year so that they are actually doing their job! And again, the best way to make sure a mouthguard fits - is to get it professionally fitted.

  5. Bonus: the best thing about getting a custom-fitted mouth guard is that you can pick from a range of fancy colours and designs. Check out the range available at Impressions Dental Prosthetics in the picture below!

Don’t forget to check in with your health care provider! While all health fund rebates differ - if you have Dental Extras as part of your health insurance, you should be able to claim one custom-fitted mouthguard per year.
