Women reach the final of the Statewide Cup (7/08/10)
Taroona FCs Premier League womens team has reached the final of the Statewide Lakoseljac Cup where they will meet the Tasmanian Institute of Sport. Just making the final itself is a first for the club. Taroona advanced to the final after defeating Ulverstone, at home, 5-2 and will go into the game with strong form after winning its last four games in convincing style, including a 7-3 thumping of powerhouse Olympia FC. However Taroona will be wary of its opponent who has also been devastating form throughout the cup, scoring an amazing 21 goals whilst conceding only 3 on its way to the final. Currently the final is scheduled to be played on the 21st of august, unfortunately further details are yet to be announced.
Hopefully everyone can support the girls as fight to win the statewide cup in its inaugural year in the top flight.

Womens Results (16/5/10)
Taroona FCs Senior womens side met Clarence United at home this weekend in the opening round of the Statewide Cup. Taroona were keen to make amends for their shock 5-1 loss to the same side at the same ground and they did not disappoint, cruising to 2-0 lead by the end of the first half. Clarence provided a more stubborn opposition in the second half, despite conceding a third, they managed to put one past the Taroona keeper with a fantastic long range shot to keep the game alive. Hopes of a comeback were quickly quashed however, when Taroona scored their fourth to seal a comprehensive win over a strong opposition. Final score 4-1.
Mens Results (16/5/10)
Taroona's Senior mens team travelled to Windsor Park this weekend to take on Northern side, Riverside Olympic, in the second round of the Statewide Lakoseljac Cup. The first half saw some good chances squandered in the opening minutes by both sides, until Riverside opened their account with a good strike from the left wing into the bottom right corner of the net. Taroona found the equaliser in the dying seconds of stoppage time of the first half, when Jordan Wright was brought down in the box and Marcus Atkinson put away the spot tick. Taroona came out much stronger after the break and looked dangerous on several occasions, yet Riverside defended stubbornly and tested the Taroona defence on the counter attack, winning a penalty, which was crucially denied by some great goalkeeping from Rick Nettlefold. Scores remained locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time, requiring extra time to decide which team would progress to the quarter finals. Riverside found a goal mid-way through the first half of extra time when a tame shot took a deflection in the box, wrong footing Nettlefold, and dribbling low into the Taroona goal. Taroona then equalised in the second half of extra time through a great finish from Jack Elliot, controlling a cross and driving the ball into the right hand corner of the net. Taroona's equaliser was in vain however as Riverside again troubled the Taroona defence on the counter and won a vital penalty, which was this time put away, to seal the match for the Home side 3-2.

Men Results(7/5/10)
Taroona's senior mens teams put on their best performance in the Premier League to date on Friday night, defeating the Tilford Zebras 4-3 in the seniors and 2-1 in the reserves. The reserves kicked things off with a strong performance across the park. Tom Ritchie was a stand out in the first half, beating his defender consistently, however he was unable to translate it into a result on the scoreboard, scores remained locked at nil all at the break. Matt Hedge broke the deadlock in the second half and Taroona quickly went on to grab a second, however a third goal was denied when Hedge put his second penalty attempt wide after bagging the first disallowed spot kick. Zebras returned fire, but it seemed a case of too little too late, Taroona held on for a comfortable 2-1 win. The seniors put together its best half of attacking football against a strong Zebras outfit, racing to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first half from goals by Gary Hamilton, Hugo Luttmer and Toby Dove. Zebras were far from dead however and the second half saw a reversal of form. A sometimes unstoppable Ben Croswell led his team's revival, scoring a crucial hatrick to level the game at 3-3. Taroona somehow managed to grab the game winner when Hamilton was brought done in the box by Telega and new recruit, David Abbott, put away the spot kick to win the game in the 92 minute.
Mens Results (7/4/10)
Taroona mens seniors played DOSA on Monday in the qualifying round of the State-wide competition for 2010.With several senior squad players unavailable it made way for Andrew Douglas and Alex Vineys senior debuts at Taroona, whilst Marcus Atkinson was moved out to the right wing in place of the absent Duncan Carey. The result was never in doubt, Taroona were able to control the game and this translated on to the scoreboard, running out 9-0 winners with 4 goals coming from Alex Viney, 3 from Toby dove and a goal apiece from Jack Elliot and Marcus Atkinson.
(Taroona womens games were moved from the Easter break and will be played at a later date.)
Mens Fourth Round Results (4/04/10)
A well under strength Taroona u19s kicked of the first away games for the season, meeting New Town Eagles at Clare Street. With many players away on Easter holidays the u19s battled hard with eight men but were finally underdone by a solitary goal, finally going down 1-0. The reserves started strong dominating much of the play for the first half, resulting in some nice play down the right wing, a strong cross and a composed header from Saad to make the score 1-0 going into the break. Taroona found themselves on the back foot for most of the second half however, eventually succumbing to 2-1 to Eagles. Taroona Seniors never gave themselves a chance, leaking three unanswered goals from poor tackling and defensive blunders. Under constant pressure from dangerous through balls Taroona continued to try and move the ball around on the ground in tight spaces, but this rarely resulted in a clear shot on the oppositions goal. Taroona put on a more stubborn and improved performance in the second half, continuing to move the ball around well, we started to find some dangerous balls to test the New Town defence. This resulted in Gary Hamilton winning a penalty, which was tucked away by Marcus Atkinson. Final score: 3-1 Eagles.
Womens Third Round Results (29/03/10)
Taroona's Premier Womens side produced a dominant display over University in their third round encounter at Kelvedon. They worked the ball around well and were rarely troubled by university, running out victors 6-1. A well under strength reserves team should also be commended for playing most of the match with eight women sometimes nine and still managing to find a 1-0 victory!
Mens Third Round Results (28/03/10)
Taroona FC faced Clarence in the third round of the Forestry Tasmania Premier League at Kelvedon Park. The under 19s produced another win, this time over Clarence, defeating them 2-0. Sam James and Hiroshi linked well down the left wing, eventually resulting in a goal whilst Tom Young got the second. Reserves, however, battled out a nil all draw to maintain their middle of the table position. The seniors looked strong for much of the first half of the match forcing several free kicks and corners in the attacking half, but with no result. Pressure from Hugo Luttmer and a quality finish from Gary Hamilton, rounding the keeper and slotting it the net, made it 1-0 going into the break. Clarence came out very strong in the opening minutes of the half putting away 2 quick goals, however the seniors managed to regain some composure to find the equaliser and salvage a point from the draw.
Womens Premier Victory (25/03/10)
Taroona FCs Premier womens side has defeated Glenorchy knights 3-2 in a thrilling comeback. The womens side fell behind early to remain 2-0 down at the half. Taroona regained its confidence and composure after the break and was able to dictate much of the play, eventually resulting in a flurry of three unanswered goals to seal the match, and their first win of the season.(photos in Gallery)
Premier Reserves were unable to field a team this week; however the club hopes to field a team for the following week. New players are still more then welcome for the 2010 season. See the Contact page for details.
Mens Second Round Results (21/03/10)
Taroona FC faced the Hobart Zebras in the second round of the Forestry Tasmania Premier League in another home clash. The under 19s produced another consistent and composed performance to overcome Zebras 3-1, however the reserves failed to replicate last weeks success going down 3-0 to a strong zebras reserve outfit. The seniors battled hard after again falling behind early, to get themselves back in the game, but failed to find the equaliser in the dying stages. Overall a commendable performance, eventually losing out 3-2.
Next Week: Taroona v Clarence at home (Kelvedon Park) 27/3/10
Women's Results (15/03/10)
The women's teams also got off to a strong start to the season. The reserve match resulted in a 1-0 loss to clarence but the team should however be commended for their strong effort. The team was largely comprised of social players and they did well to handle the pressure of playing in a much higher then anticipated level.
The seniors fought back hard, after falling behind early, to gain a 2-2 draw against Clarence
Taroona clean sweep at home! (13/03/10)
Taroona FC began the 2010 season in scintillating form, recording victories in the men's under 19's, Reserves and seniors over Olympia Warriors in the first round of the Forestry Tasmania Premier League.
It's the first time that the club has achieved the feat in the Premier League and the results reflect the hard work of the players, coaches and committee in the lead up to the opening match day. The u19's ran away 5-1 winners in a dominant display, whilst the reserves battled hard for a 1-0 win. The seniors completed the trio of wins after falling behind early to gain a much needed 3-1 result at home.
The women's season kicks off tommorow when they meet clarence at home.

President's Column 22/4/10
This Anzac weekend sees our Youth teams taking the park for the first time.
2010 again sees Taroona as one of the strongest clubs in terms of youth participation in Tasmania. Fielding 7 youth teams places us in the top echelon of the youth competition, and in terms of the other Premier League clubs equalled only by Clarence and Kingborough . This augers well for the future with good representation across all age-groups in both boys and girls.
Half of the club plays in the youth competition and I must congratulate the youth committee of Gaynor Cherry, Jeanette and Tim O'Sullivan for their efforts in getting the teams and registrations together this year. It is a mammoth task that few in the club recognise.
A couple of quick stats for 2010.
We have over 210 registered players.
60% of our players are under the age of 18.
40% of the club are female
I wish all the youth players a great start to the season and welcome all the players and parents we are seeing for the first time.
You will see me at your games throughout the season - dont be a stranger, come up and introduce yourself.
Cheers

Taroona was founded in 1972 out of the disbanded Taroona Ajax Soccer Club and immediately made an impact on southern soccer circles by winning the Metrolpolitan League Division Two. The club gained promotion, but due to dramatic personnel changes they were relegated the following year and even failed to field a senior side in the 1976 and 1977 seasons, entering only junior sides.
Taroona's prayers were answered however, when in 1978 St Mirren Lindisfarne agreed to amalgamate and play under the banner of Taroona St Mirren. The Eastern shore rivals had players but no ground - Taroona had a ground but no players. It was a marriage of convenience, but a divorce was on the horizon.
St Mirren had won the division two title, scoring a massive 120 goals. Managed by Billy Pattison and John Kirkpatrick, they had players such as Dave Forshaw and Jimmy Kerr, formerly of White Eagles, goal-ace Paddy Gibson and youngsters Dale Blake, Derek Krause and Dean Brushette to consolidate their league position.
Taroona have not played outside division one since 1978 and during the eighties have pursued that elusive title, coming close on a few occasions. In 1980 Billy Pattison left to form PO Saints and with the departure Taroona was quick to dispense with the"St Mirren name-tag" from their title. The 1987 season could be regarded as one of the clubs most successful to date. They finished just a point off champions University in division one, but won the pre-season cup and gained some consolation by beating the students in the leagues knockout cup competition.
Many of the 1987 team were former state league "seasoned campaigners"; John Paplos, Larry Darko, Eddie Stewart, Shane Carver, Peter Sherman, Brian McKay, and the Ross brothers, Brett and Craig. The Ross family have long been associated with the club.
The pitch at Kelvedon Park is one of the best playing surfaces in the state. This could be credited to to the club President ("Mr Taroona") John Ross, who looked after the area like a "billiard table". The picturesque ground has always been a pleasure to visit by opposing players and supporters alike.
In 1989 Taroona recaptured the pre-season trophy but once again the year proved a disappointment. Paul Furjanic departed to Canada and captain Brian McKay signed for PO Saints. The loss of these two key players added to the club's woes with only a mid-table position being obtained.
During the nineties, Taroona finished in the top half of the division one table, but still have not found the correct balance to sustain a challenge for the the title. However, 1n 1999 Taroona again won the pre-season competitioon and finished runners-up to South Hobart in the league. They then went on to qualify for the "grand-final series" but lost to Kingborough Lions 1-0 in the final under lights at KGV.
Other players over the years to make an impact at the club have been; player/coach Bruno Cengia, Michael Horne, Hayden Fisher, Chris Smithies, Mathew Hughes, Rod Saunders, James Hughes and goalkeeper Nathan Meyers. More recently, Martyn Wells, and Daniel Palmer have added much needed firepower to the attack with their sights firmly set on that elusive Premier League title.
The Way It Was
Chris Hudson was appointed Senior Coach before the start of the 2006 season, but never actually took charge as his return to Tasmania from NSW was delayed. President (and player) Barry Hagan reluctantly took over for pre-season and the first part of the year, before Greg McVeigh stepped in after a knee injury ended his playing season prematurely.
Although Taroona finished second or third in Division One every season between 1999 and 2005, we'd managed to find a variety of ways to throw away titles. There were the slow starts such as in 2005, when we only took 1 point from our first three games (all at home) before an unbelievable run of form got us to within 2 points of top spot with only a game to play (which of course we lost anyway). Then there were end-of-season chokes, such as 1999, when we led the league by 12 points before certain key players who shall remain nameless went on a surfing safari with half a dozen or so games to play, taking our title chances with them.
In 2006, it was the mid-season slump which threatened to derail our campaign. After a great start to the season that included a win over Kingborough in the Summer Cup final followed by a 9-0 home win against the same team the following week in the league, injuries started to mount, players went walkabout and losses to Nelson (for the first time in living memory) and Beachside undermined our title challenge. Once Greg McVeigh took over as coach however, everything seemed to come together and apart from a 4-1 loss at Kingborough in his second game in charge, we never looked back.
The decisive point was probably the comeback against second-placed DOSA at the Showgrounds in the third last game of the season. Struggling to get our passing game going on an uneven, rock-hard pitch, we quickly went two goals behind before Duncan Carey scored directly from a corner to make it 2-1. DOSA promptly restored their 2 goal buffer, going 3-1 up as a result of slack marking at a set piece. Despite the usual bollocking dished out by Nathan Meyers, there was a confidence about this team that had been lacking in previous seasons, and a belief that we had enough firepower to overcome a two goal deficit. Sure enough, the game soon turned around, starting when Jack Elliott beat two defenders with a wonderful piece of skill before crossing from the left for Dan Palmer to shoot from close range. The DOSA keeper could only parry it straight into the path of Ben Horgan, who slammed it home to make it 3-2. Moments later a goal kick from Meyers was flicked on by Horgan, and Chris Cox volleyed home spectacularly from 25 yards for an improbable 3-3 half time scoreline. The second half was one way traffic as a rampant Palmer and Wells inspired another four unanswered goals for a memorable 7-3 win.
The following week saw us venture to Sandown to take on third-placed Beachside, who had thrashed us at home in our earlier league encounter and had often been our bogey side in previous years. This time we took the lead twice and Beachside equalised twice, before Beachside's striker Nick Gibson was shown a red card for making an offensive gesture at the large group of rowdy Taroona supporters during his goal celebration. The result was never in doubt though and we went on to record a 5-2 victory.
The final game of the season was at home to Huon Valley, in front of a huge crowd that must have numbered over 300. With Kingborough now breathing down our necks in second place, we needed a win to guarantee the title would be ours without having to rely on other results. Despite having an excellent win-loss record against the Valley, we were wary of the scoring threat posed by their star striker Martin Elliott and with such a lot riding on the game, we started nervously. The first half saw an incredible number of dubious offside calls go against Taroona as the officials struggled to keep up with the pace of Wells and Cox. It appeared to be only a matter of time however before the Valley's offside trap would be broken, and eventually Wells raced onto a through ball and gave Taroona the lead with a trademark run and finish. Duncan Carey scored Taroona's second as Valley's resistance was broken, and the third from a penalty to round off a comfortable 3-0 win (and thereby winning two cases of creaming soda on a bet that he would score more goals during the season than defenders Ben Horgan and Cian Carey). The celebrations were memorable, with Jon Hughes honouring his promise that if Taroona won Division One he would jump in the chilly waters of the Derwent.
The final objective for the season was to gain promotion to the Premier League. To do this, we needed to beat the last-placed Premier League side Hobart United (who had been promoted the year before) in a play off over two legs, home and away. The first leg at home was much like the previous week's game - an even larger crowd and Taroona dominant but unable to capitalise on our chances until Wells and Palmer scored, giving us a 2-0 lead going into the away leg. Ruairi Murphy, drafted into the side just before kick-off as a replacement for Ben Schaap and making his first Senior appearance of the season, was sensational in marking the dangerous Brad Gilroy out of the game. The only concern was a hamstring injury which forced Wells to be substituted at half time.
The kick off of the second leg, played under lights at KGV, was delayed as two earlier games had gone to extra time and penalties. The tension was unbearable and several players were actually physically ill in the dressing rooms beforehand. Once the game finally kicked off, Hobart United scored the first goal against the run of play when Nathan Meyers came off his line too slowly to intercept a through ball, and it was 2-1 on aggregate. There was no panic however and only moments later Martyn Wells, showing no signs of the hamstring injury which had threatened to keep him out of the game all week, rounded off a sweeping Taroona attack to make it 3-1 and the KGB grandstand was rocking as the huge contingent of Taroona supporters celebrated with chants of "If Taroona's going Premier clap your hands".
The second half was a memorable half of football for the Taroona faithful, in particular the longer-serving (and suffering) Taroona players and supporters. Martyn Wells was unstoppable, scoring twice more to complete his hat-trick and tormenting the Hobart United defence. Marcus Kennedy, also under an injury cloud before the game with a hamstring injury, dominated the midfield alongside Jack Elliott. Defenders Ben Horgan and Cian Carey both got their names on the scoresheet with headed goals from corners and the final result was a 5-1 win, making it 7-1 on aggregate and sealing our promotion to the Premier League.

•To provide an opportunity and pathway for youth players to progress to playing football at higher levels, preferably with the Taroona Football Club.
Parent Assistance
It is an expectation (not a request) of the TFC that parents participate in the management of their childrens teams.
This can be done in a number of ways through coaching, refereeing/line duties, team management etc. TFC is a growing club but it is run by a small committee of players and parents. Therefore, parent help in managing teams and assisting the club generally is vital to the clubs continued success.
TFC will provide support to parents in fulfilling these duties through a Mums and Dads refereeing instruction session run by TFC, tuition/demonstrations on how to run the line and/or providing access to the more formal coaching/refereeing courses run by FFT.
Written guidelines will also be issued to Team Managers, which every team will be required to appoint in 2010 to lighten the coaches workloads.
TFC would prefer that coaches do not referee matches involving their teams.
Grading Policy
TFC recognises that youth players will always be at different stages of their football development depending on background, experience, playing ability, age, maturity, attitude, physical capacities etc.
The Clubs grading policy is to place players in a division and team that are appropriate to their level of skill development, as determined by the coaches.
Where there are more than a manageable number of players in an age group for one team the following options will be explored:
•Adjust other teams by moving players up in age groups (subject to agreement by players, parents and coaches).
•Create two (or more) teams within the age group concerned. Players will be allocated to these teams according to ability levels and the teams will be placed in divisions appropriate to the teams ability.
This policy will allow players to play at a level equivalent to their ability to ensure that they are involved as much as possible and gain maximum enjoyment and development as a player and as an individual.
New Player Policy
TFC welcomes new players to the club. However, it may not be possible in all instances to place every new player in a team appropriate to his or her age or level of ability.
Where numbers in teams are low, new players will generally be accommodated. Where numbers are already high the following options might be explored:
•Adjust existing teams by moving players up in age groups (subject to agreement by players, parents and coaches) to accommodate new players.
•Create two (or more) teams within the age group concerned.
The TFC grading policy would be used to facilitate either of these options.
Unfortunately, if none of these options are acceptable to both the club and the player it may be necessary for the new player to locate to another club.
Strip/(Uniform) Policy
The official strip to be worn by all TFC players (senior and youth) for every match in which they are representing the club is as follows:
WHITE TFC STRIP (TOP) supplied by TFC.
BLACK SHORTS supplied by you.
WHITE SOCKS supplied by you.
This applies to both home and away games but black socks should be taken to all away games so they can be worn if required due to a clash of colours.
On some occasions it may also be necessary to wear an away strip (top) at games where there is a clash of colours (e.g. Hobart Zebras).
Managers will be instructed to collect all strips at the end of each match and to keep them as a team lot. They are not to be handed out to players to keep for the season.
Shin guards are to be worn at training and during matches and mouthguards are recommended. Other FFT requirements - not wearing ANY jewellery and the use of appropriate sports eyewear (rather than everyday glasses) - should also be met.
Registration Fees
Both senior and youth registration fees have been raised in 2010 to cover cost increases in running the club and the increase in payments that we are required to make to the FFT/FFA.
The registration fee for youth players will be $135.
Your fees are distributed as follows:
FFA - $11
FFT - $26
TFC - $98
Registration
Registration will be a two stage process in 2010:
1. On registration day we will register your interest in playing with TFC and note your personal details (name, age, etc.)
2. The club will then organise the teams and you will be contacted and asked to proceed to the formal registration process. You can register and pay your fees on-line (see below).
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REGISTER UNTIL ADVISED BY TIM, GAYNOR OR JEANETTE.
In some cases it may be necessary to register by other means (manually) but it is the clubs preference that intending players register and pay their fees on-line in 2010.
Help will be available to those without internet access and TFC will continue to accept payment from players who prefer not to pay on-line.
